EZ-Tracks is a completely free service which, apparently, lets you download songs by big name artists completely free and completely legally. It is entirely supported by advertising and the original artists are paid royalties on each download - according to the web site's info section.
This sounds great, in theory. In reality we didn't really trust EZ-tracks from the outset. From the minute you arrive at the front page of their web site you are bombarded with flashy adverts, pop ups and noise. However, we persevered and tried to sign up. To even do this we had to go through no less than 6 different full page adds before being shown the sign up screen. You only need an email address to sign up, but judging by the remarkable increase in junk mail we received after signing up we would recommend using a free email address you don't care about.
Eventually we managed to download a track and were instantly disappointed. Great, we thought, settling down to listen to Nickelback's 'Rockstar', but then we pressed play. What came through our speakers was a very bad rendition of an admittedly not very great song to begin with - apparently by a group called Countdown. What we hadn't realised is that any tracks with an asterics like this '*' beside them are not by the original artist. Most seem to be by Countdown, who we can only assume EZ-Tracks found in some back street bar playing terrible covers and perhaps offered to pay their booze money to record them. It seems the majority of the 50,000 free tracks EZ-Tracks boasts to have are cheap and nasty covers.
There isn't really much good to say about EZ-Tracks. If you are prepared to trawl through all the advertising and scour the site you might find a free download of a song you want by the original artist, but we think it's unlikely. Unless you are really desperate we recommend steering well clear of EZ-Tracks.
