My Coke Music is more of a promotional tool for the Coca Cola Company than a fully fledged digital music service. However, it is quite a useful and fun website to visit when looking for new music.
The idea behind MyCokeMusic is that new bands can upload their music to the web site where industry people will listen to it and possibly include it in the music library. Bands can win prizes, such as recording studio time, if they are voted the favourite by listeners. The official blurb states that Coca Cola's aim is to bring new, talented artists to the stage and support the beginning of their careers.
The website itself is quite basic, but does offer a good looking, Flash based interface. It's quite similar to the latest iTunes interface for browsing your albums in 3D, but all the fancy graphics seemed to slow down our browser a bit.
When arriving at the site you are presented with this interface and some back and forward buttons to cycle through a randomly chosen selection of new artists. This is different each time you visit so is a great way to find something new you might like. If you like the look of someone you can click their picture to be given a list of tracks available for streaming. There is also basic search functionality so that you can get back to someone you liked.
What disappointed us was the complete lack of any artist information - all you get is a picture and list of tracks. Also there are no options to browse by genre so you have nothing to base your decision on what to listen to. That said, some of the tracks we listened to at random were actually quite good, but it really is pot luck.
My Coke Music is an interesting gimmick for Coca Cola, but doesn't attempt to be a complete music download service. It's worth a play if you have a few minutes spare, but for any serious music downloading check out some of the sites in our top 10 list.
