Playlouder started off life as a music news web site, and then merged to become the world's first 'MSP'. According to Playlouder an MSP is a Music Service Provider, or to the rest of us an ISP which bundles free music downloads into your monthly price plan.
The service is apparently only available in the UK, but we could not figure out how you actually sign up for the ISP. There doesn't seem to be any links on the main page, or anywhere else on the site. Therefore we aren't even sure how much it costs, or what speeds it offers. Never mind though, let's concentrate on the digital music side of things.
Playlouder is essentially a music oriented social networking site. There are lots of features for getting in touch with other members and submitting your own content. Any member can post reviews of music, or tag music to help categorize it for other people to find. There is also a, perhaps badly named, feature called 'stalk' which will inform you of what any user you choose to stalk is listening to. It's a great way to find new music by seeing what your friends are into, but perhaps a little too invasive because we couldn't figure out a way not to be stalked.
The site itself is, quite frankly, horribly designed and set out. It's also slow to load because everything seems to get dumped on one page and you have to trawl through each entry to find something that interests you. The music page offers quite a lot of music for streaming, but only ISP members can download it. Furthermore, it's all by unsigned, new artists - none of which we had heard of. On the plus side, there is a lot of interesting content if you can bear the horrendous neon colours and badly laid out mess of hyperlinks.
We don't really understand what Playlouder is trying to achieve with its social networking-cum-ISP-cum-music download service idea, but it's still only in Beta stages so maybe we shouldn't judge. For now though, if you are looking for some serious music downloads check out some of the sites in out top 10 list.
