Spiralfrog is a completely free music download service which supports itself through advertising. You can find a reasonable selection of songs by popular artists all for free download. Clearly, being a free service, there are some restrictions, but on the whole Spiralfrog delivers what it promises.
We were curious as to how Spiralfrog works, and slightly wary of signing up to the service, especially because it requires you to download and install software before it lets you at the tunes. However, after reading the well written help section our fears were put to rest due to the surprising honesty in describing how the site works.
Basically the artists are paid royalties based on the number of times their track is downloaded, and the royalties are paid for through revenue generated from advertising. This is completely legal and Spiralfrog has agreements in place with the record companies to allow it to give away certain tracks for free. It doesn't try to hide from the fact that you are going to have to watch adverts if you want the free music either. The FAQ tells us in no uncertain terms that the reason we can only download one track at a time is so that we have to sit there and watch adverts as they are downloading.
Regarding Digital Rights Management (DRM):
The tracks you download come encoded in WMA format at 192 kbps quality. They are DRM protected, and won't work on iPods or Zune, but will play on most portable players which support PlaysForSure technology. You are limited to copying to 2 portable players, but can listen to the tracks as much as you want on your PC running Windows Media player 10 or 11.
Spiralfrog is an interesting step forward in the approach to how we access digital music. Although its library isn't huge you will be sure to find something that you have heard of. Of course, the adverts are a pain, but they have to make a profit somehow so we can't really complain. If you have the time and patience to get through it all you will get on well with Spiralfrog, but if you want hassl- free downloads look at some of the paid for services in our top 10 list.
