Tesco digital is the online arm of the UK supermarket giant of the same name. As such you can expect a huge music library to choose from, which is constantly updated with the latest tunes. The service is only available in the UK at the moment so those in the states may have to look elsewhere.
The TescoDigital site is one part of the whole digital entertainment section of the Tesco web site. There is also a Games section with lots of games to download or play through your web browser and a TV and Film section coming soon. There is also a small news section providing lots of information about new music and films being released.
The whole site is very well designed and easy to use. There are a couple of neat little flash based widgets for browsing songs and albums too. Tesco don't provide details of exactly how many tracks are in their library, but we could find most of the new releases we could think of as well as a fairly extensive back catalogue. Tracks are all searched for through the web site, but to download them you have to use Tesco's own download manager. This has handy features for keeping licenses up to date and allowing you to re-download songs you have paid for but lost.
Regarding Digital Rights Management (DRM): tracks can be downloaded in MP3 or WMA format, but strangely no information is given as to the quality of either format. MP3 tracks are DRM free and you can burn them to CDs and copy them to portable players as much as you want. WMA downloads are protected and will only work on devices that support PlaysForSure technology.
Is it good value for money? Well, Tesco Digital is certainly not one of the cheapest download sites around. Individual songs are generally £0.79, while albums are £7.97. There are the odd exceptions to this when certain songs are on a promotional deal.
In all, Tesco Digital is a fairly decent download service. We would like to see more artist information and more tracks available as MP3 files though. The whole service seems to be aimed at novice computer users so if you are a bit more experienced you might be better off going elsewhere. Furthermore we are pretty certain you can find most of the music Tesco Digital offers cheaper elsewhere. However, you won't go far wrong if you do choose to sign up to this service as it delivers where it promises to.
