Woolworths Download is the online presence of the UK based high street retailer. It provides masses of content at reasonable prices and is instantly recognizable from the distinctive red branding. The service is only available in the UK at the moment so those living elsewhere may have to look at a different service.
The Woolworths Download web site has recently been revamped and is looking all the better for it. Its instantly recognizable branding brings back the familiarity of the high street shop that very few towns in the UK are without. We noticed the site was very quick to load and is laid out very professionally. The flash based widgets make browsing the wide variety of content much more fun than some of Woolworths' competitors' websites.
The site is split into four main sections dealing with each of the types of content Woolworths Download offers: music, video, games and mobile. Each section has a similar feel to it, but games are provided through a partner company called Zyom. There is a wide variety of content on offer, ranging from new release DVDs to obscure artists' back catalogues.
Regarding Digital Rights Management (DRM): the music you download from Woolworths may be in MP3 or WMA format, depending on what is available. WMA files are DRM protected and the licensing, somewhat confusingly, varies between songs. MP3 downloads, however, are always DRM free and can be copied to CD and portable player as often as you like. The video content is provided in WMV format and is protected by a DRM mechanism.
What about value for money? Well,
Woolworths Download offers some very reasonable prices for content. Individual tracks are usually charged at £0.77, but when we visited there was a promotion on top 10 tracks bringing them down to £0.59. Whole albums vary depending on the number of tracks, but new releases are generally around £7.97. The other content provided varies drastically in price so it's difficult to give an average figure. It really depends on what you are after.
Woolworths Download is a solid, reliable service. The prices are fairly average, and with the regular promotions you often find a good deal. The site doesn't offer anything particularly special, but has a good range of content - and the games section is not something every site has. Although there are probably better services around, Woolworths Download will more than likely satisfy your needs as a music download service.
